No fewer than 6 people have lost their lives amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment event held in a stadium in Ghana.

The Wednesday's "devastating" incident seems to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of candidates who overcame security measures and rushed into the entrances," stated a statement from the nation's military.

22 additional individuals were injured, among them 5 who remain in serious state.

Thousands had turned up at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, the capital, with the aspiration of enlisting in the armed forces.

The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics show, and such enlistment drives typically attract massive gatherings and often lead to chaotic scenes.

The deadline to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a week to accommodate additional candidates, as some had faced challenges in the process.

Military representative Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the crush took place ahead of the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

Ghana's President John Mahama has gone to see the injured in hospital.

Order has been restored, and the enlistment process has since begun.
