RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
